Microsoft and Nokia Partnership

Well my Twittter has gone crazy when I woke up thismorning

The day has finally com for the industries worst kept secret, Microsoft and Nokia have created a Smartpgone partnership and not just Nokia using WP7 as an OEM.
This partnership will also include Bing, Live and Xbox and has to be the best news we have had so far.
For me Nokia has always had one of the best build qualities of any device and they certainly put HTC to shame, so with the Nokia magic let's hope to have better optics and reliability. Symbian always had issues and Nokia fell foul to it's constant recalls with certain models.

The one thing I will say though, for this to work well they have to get it right from the start and not the second or third device.
I know I'm saving my pennies for the first release :-)

More details from WMPoweruser and Engadget

And here is the whole press release from Nokia

London, Feb. 11, 2011 - Nokia and Microsoft today announced plans to form a broad strategic partnership that would use their complementary strengths and expertise to create a new global mobile ecosystem.

Nokia and Microsoft intend to jointly create market-leading mobile products and services designed to offer consumers, operators and developers unrivalled choice and opportunity. As each company would focus on its core competencies, the partnership would create the opportunity for rapid time to market execution. Additionally, Nokia and Microsoft plan to work together to integrate key assets and create completely new service offerings, while extending established products and services to new markets.

Under the proposed partnership:

- Nokia would adopt Windows Phone as its principal smartphone strategy, innovating on top of the platform in areas such as imaging, where Nokia is a market leader.

- Nokia would help drive the future of Windows Phone. Nokia would contribute its expertise on hardware design, language support, and help bring Windows Phone to a larger range of price points, market segments and geographies.

- Nokia and Microsoft would closely collaborate on joint marketing initiatives and a shared development roadmap to align on the future evolution of mobile products.

- Bing would power Nokia's search services across Nokia devices and services, giving customers access to Bing's next generation search capabilities. Microsoft adCenter would provide search advertising services on Nokia's line of devices and services.

- Nokia Maps would be a core part of Microsoft's mapping services. For example, Maps would be integrated with Microsoft's Bing search engine and adCenter advertising platform to form a unique local search and advertising experience

- Nokia's extensive operator billing agreements would make it easier for consumers to purchase Nokia Windows Phone services in countries where credit-card use is low.

- Microsoft development tools would be used to create applications to run on Nokia Windows Phones, allowing developers to easily leverage the ecosystem's global reach.

- Nokia's content and application store would be integrated with Microsoft Marketplace for a more compelling consumer experience.

"Today, developers, operators and consumers want compelling mobile products, which include not only the device, but the software, services, applications and customer support that make a great experience," Stephen Elop, Nokia President and CEO, said at a joint news conference in London. "Nokia and Microsoft will combine our strengths to deliver an ecosystem with unrivalled global reach and scale. It's now a three-horse race."

"I am excited about this partnership with Nokia," said Steven A. Ballmer, Microsoft CEO. "Ecosystems thrive when fueled by speed, innovation and scale. The partnership announced today provides incredible scale, vast expertise in hardware and software innovation and a proven ability to execute."

WP7 Podcast Announce the Backup and Restore You Always Wanted

Looking forward to the Windows Phone 7 update? Matt Akers at Windows Phone Radio has just announced a backup and restore feature that will make updating a breeze.

How often in the past with other devices like Windows Mobile and Android have you flashed a ROM or just performed an update and then had the pain of setting everything up again? I know you can create a cab backup etc but now Zune also puts your phone's apps and settings back to how it was before the update. So even though you will have a nice new update under the bonnet all your apps and setting will be as you had them previously so no need to have the hassle or remembering what app you had and what setting you need for this and that, Zune does it all for you.

Interestingly if there is a problem or even if the update process has a problem you can roll back to the previous version you had running.

How's that for making a stress free and easy update life?

The podcast can be found HERE

Windows Phone 7 Update details announced

The new Windows Phone 7 update information has finally been released
While there is no official date as yet it is hoped to be announced soon but it certainly looks like the Windows Phone 7 team are on schedule to make this great OS even better with some much requested improvements.

So you are all asking what is exactly in the update?

Well..... read on,

Copy and paste
Soon you’ll be able to copy text from emails, text messages, web pages, and Office Mobile documents, and paste it anywhere you can type.

Using copy and paste is easy and intuitive. In many cases you just tap a word, slide your finger to highlight any additional text, then tap the Copy icon. To insert this text in a message or app, just tap the spot where it should go, then tap the Paste icon.

Copy and paste is a handy way to quickly send someone’s latest Facebook update, turn-by-turn directions from Maps, or a must-see link from Internet Explorer Mobile. Once you’ve copied something, you can paste it again and again.

The new feature adds to the list of time-saving shortcuts already built into Windows Phone, like the ability to tap an address on a webpage to map it (US only).

Faster apps and games
Nobody likes to wait. That’s why we’ve whittled down the time it takes for apps and games to start up and resume. It’s all part of our focus on getting you to the things you love, easier and faster.

Better Marketplace search
We’ve streamlined Marketplace search to make it easier to find specific apps, games, or music. Press the Search button in the apps or games section of Marketplace and you’ll see only apps or games in the results.

Press Search in the music section of Marketplace to search just the music catalog.

Getting phone updates
How will you know when an update is available? Easy. Your phone is designed to automatically tell you via a pop-up message (unless you’ve turned this option off). For more details, see How do I update my phone software?

Thanks for the update MS (taken from the Windows Phone Site )

How to Upgrade Memory on HTC HD7 to 32GB

Love the HTC HD7 but hate the low amount of included memory? For most, 8/16GB is plenty, but for those that like to endlessly store music, movies, and apps, the memory ceiling on the HD7 might seem a bit low. Fear not, HD7 owners, because there is a way to bump your memory by a factor of four (or two, depending on how much you're starting off with) if you're willing to get down and dirty by doing some basic internal modifications to your HD7. A tutorial on XDA shows you how to dissect the HD7 to access its microSD slot. All you have to do is swap out the included card for a 32GB class 2 card, clear the memory, and boom...more memory.

Samsung Updates Windows Phone 7 Network Profile App

The Samsung Network Profile application allows Samsung Windows Phone 7 owners with unlocked devices to switch the active network profile and make their devices do MMS with proper settings.

With the lacks of the original application up on Marketplace, came a Homebrew program that tried to address issues but the downside was that it would only run on unlocked Windows Phone 7 handsets. Samsung has just updated its official Network Profile application which has now hit version 1.9 and according to reports, it runs as it should fixing all the issues. If you have an unlocked Samsung Windows Phone 7 (like the Omnia 7), let us know about the app in the comments below!

TouchXplorer Windows Phone 7 File Explorer Demoed, Coming Soon

Julien Schapman, the developer of TouchXperience, just hit our inbox with some interesting news on his latest project. He’s created a file explorer, called TouchXplorer, for Windows Phone 7 that supports standard file operations, such as open, edit, copy, move, delete, rename, and search, with “full access to the system.” It almost reminds us of the file explorer from the last generation of Windows Phone, but with a makeover. There is a catch, though, your device needs to be unlocked, as Microsoft disallows programs like TouchXplorer from entering the Marketplace. Schapman claims it will not be blocked by OS updates, but also expresses uncertainty on its compatibility with non-HTC Windows Phones. His plan is to release TouchXplorer within the next day or two, so stay tuned to his website. In the meantime, check out the preview video for TouchXplorer below and let us know what you think.

Update: TouchXplorer has been released. You will need to sideload the app. Please be careful with it, as it gives you full access to system files.

Nokia Talks To Microsoft About Windows Phone 7?

Russian website Mobile-Review went on posting an interesting bit according to which Nokia is in the talks with Microsoft about Windows Phone 7, discussions allegedly initiated by the new Nokia management.

We also heard a "trusted source" rumor about the likeliness of Windows Phone 7 powered Nokia devices but Niklas Savander, Nokia's executive vice president and general manager for Markets told CNet Asia that the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer has no plans for either Android nor Windows Phone.

The recent rumors mention a new line of Nokia branded Windows Phone devices with specific Nokia features but given all the back and forth around the subject we're a little bit skeptical, not that we didn't want to see a Nokia Windows Phone 7 but because all the buzz around MeeGo. And let's not forget that Windows Phone does not offer "an incremental opportunity for us to add value that would sustain a competitive advantage over somebody else", according to Niklas Savander, just one and a half month ago, and the Microsoft platform did not change since then, even though we're expecting an update early 2011.
